Hi Sir Spamalot. Not sure about the boardwalk. But we have always walked along the beach to the gap anyway..Well almost you just need to cut up through a lane when the beach runs out..Then your almost at the gap ...
Thanks. The beach would be good to walk during the day but I don't think I'll get my wife to walk there in here evening shoes for dinner so we'll probably take a cab or walk the sidewalks.
Just got back from BIM yesterday (Monday). Boardwalk is supposed to start @ The Hilton (but I didn't view progress at that end). Terminates at Accra / Rockley beach where it looks nowhere near finished. Excavators still working daily and access from the beach to the boardwalk next to Accra Beach Hotel is roped off. Don't think it is ever intended to go all the way down to the Gap. It would take a hell of a lot of work to build out and get it past Champers.

It looks like I am going to have to eat some of my previous words on this thread. Last evening I was able to walk along the boardwalk from the esplanade in Hastings to the point where it finishes on Rockley Beach in front of Magic Isle which is across the street from Bubba's. It was around sunset but there were a lot of people out walking, jogging and hanging out. The landscaping is in along where I walked but I do not know the state of the project north of there. It is a very nice addition to what the south coast has to offer. It was good to see sandy beaches (actually very coarse sand with large pebbles and rocks) where only recently there were just waves crashing against sea walls. We shall see how they stand up to mother nature, although it is tough to imagine waves crossing the rather large "headland" in front of KFC which was regularly flooded with salt water during really rough seas. The only downside I noticed as I was there around and after sunset was that in many spots it becomes rather dark which could be a safety issue at night. I do not know if they intend to install lighting. Hopefully, I will get to test the other half toward Coconut Court during or before the Christmas holidays.
The project isn't quite finished but Barbados' new 1.6 metres of seaside boardwalk is already a hit with joggers, walkers, sightseers and people just looking to relax by the beach.
The Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) said it was now putting the finishing touches to the Waterfront Improvement Project that took in the stretch from Accra Beach to St Matthias, Christ Church.
But hotel and restaurant personnel said the boardwalk, with its ample seating and wide steps leading to the beach, had been drawing locals as well as tourists.
"We get all types using the facilities - including people jogging, people strolling, sightseeing or just relaxing," said David Gittens of Almond Bay Caterers.
The $18.4 million facelift, which began in June 2007, is very close to completion, CZMU spokesman Antonio Rowe told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
Workmen are putting the finishing touches to the development that includes the boardwalk and five headlands (four of concrete and one made up of granite rocks) used to mitigate wave action.
But some "remedial work" had to be done on the Hastings Rocks section, Rowe reported.
That work should be done between January and March next year or should be one of the first CZMU projects for the 2009-2010 financial year, he added.
Meantime, business people in the area have called for lighting of the boardwalk and police patrols.
They have also urged people using the facilities to respect them and not to let their dogs and other animals make a mess there.
"This project has done a lot to enhance the area," Gittens noted. "It has helped bring back some of the beaches we had lost." (TY)
Was speaking to someone the other day who had been there ,they thought it very nice but were not sure about the new headlands causing more problems than they solve(as usual...see West coast!)
Roughly - very roughly how long would it take to walk from the Boardwalk at Rockley to the Hilton - possibly allowing for a few refreshment stops along the way? Also where at the Hilton does it stop - does it take you directly onto Carlisle Bay or somewhere before the Hilton?

Under Scrutiny: Under the Boardwalk
4/13/2009
By Stephen Alleyne
As the northbound surf caressed the sandy beach of the South Coast under the watchful eyes of the waxing April moon, I strolled along the newly built Boardwalk between Hastings and Worthings the other night. Alone.
And as I made this excursion, I instinctively began to hum the Drifter’s 1964 pop hit Under the Boardwalk which goes:
“Oh, when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire-proof Under the boardwalk, down by the sea, yeah On a blanket with my baby is where I’ll be
(Chorus) “Under the boardwalk, out of the sun Under the boardwalk, we’ll be havin’ some fun Under the boardwalk, people walking above Under the boardwalk, we’ll be falling in love Under the board-walk, board-walk!”
The sight of the police in the press on their motorised scooter patrol on the Boardwalk a week ago was a reminder that I had not taken the time out to enjoy what pleasures the Boardwalk had to offer. I am impressed. I was surprised at the number of locals who go there on evenings to walk, jog, chat, fish and relax – the young, the not-so-young, the old, males by themselves, females by themselves, couples.
However, I see the Boardwalk as much more than a place where people go to kill time. I have a vision of the Boardwalk developing into a cultural village, and I invite the Ministers of Culture and Tourism to give it some serious thought. I see no reason why we can’t have a variety of cultural events at different points along the walk where people can move from point to point until they find an event that suits their taste. We could have a night for pan on the Hastings Rocks end, another night for spouge, another for jazz, another for reggae, another for calypso, another for folk, another for dance, another for art and another for local cuisine or any other event.
It would perhaps be a good idea to give this suggestion a trial run during the upcoming Crop Over season if plans haven’t yet been finalised. And it’s not necessary to do anything too elaborate at this stage; one cavalcade at the Rocks would be impactful.
However, a word of caution. I’ve noticed there’s a scarcity of bins along the Boardwalk and we must be careful to protect the environment. To refuse to make provisions for the disposal of waste is to encourage people to litter. Fortunately, things haven’t got out of hand and we must nip it in the bud. Bins and toilet facilities must be put in place and barbecuing must be banned from the area. As a matter of fact, I see nothing wrong with making the area a ‘no smoking’ zone. People who go there should be guaranteed a breath of fresh air. One other thing I must mention: there was a presence of uniformed police officers up to the time I left, not humming, but singing the following verse:
“From the park you hear the happy sound of a carousel Mm-mm, you can almost taste the hot dogs and French fries they sell Under the boardwalk, down by the sea On a blanket with my baby is where I’ll be.”
We enjoyed our walks and time on the Boardwalk and the government can at least be proud of that project although it was probably the previous Arthur administration that got it under way.
