A combined operation involving the Barbados drug squad, the Regional Security System, and the Barbados coast guard has intercepted a boat at sea carrying more than 2,300 pounds of cannabis worth just over $4.5 million Barbados dollars.

The boat was stopped at just after 9pm last night in Schooners Bay, near Speightstown in St Peter.

One Barbadian and two Vincentians, were held onboard the vessel, and are helping the police with their investigation.

Update:

A neighbor just telephoned to tell me that the Bajan caught in this bust is someone we may know. He is originally from St. Lucy but dates a woman from our neighborhood. He spent several years in prison (< 10) for similar activity back in the 1990s and was released only a few short years ago. Never really had a conversation with him beyond comments about the state of the beach. I had missed seeing him around for several weeks and only Sunday inquired about his whereabouts and was told he was out fishing on a long boat (or ice boat - a big launch with cold storage facilities used for extended ocean-going fishing trips). Well, he was apparently "fishing" alright, only problem he keeps ending up in the net.   Some fish never learn.   Hmmmm, I wonder if he was planning to land his cargo on our beach, after all, we are just a stone's throw away from Schooner Bay... Nooooooo :!: :!: :!:

Update:
From a conversation on the beach this morning I learned that the ice boat was gone for 7 weeks. Normally these boats are out to sea fishing (200 - 300 miles from shore) for 10 days to two weeks. It was not reported stolen implying that its owner may or may not know something about why it was gone. The owner lives in Ashton Hall, St. Peter parts of which are known no-go areas particularly at night because of drug related activity. Just by way of clarification Ashton Hall isn't all bad. I have family and friends who live there and several prominent Bajans have originally come from in or near this part of the country including two past Prime Ministers and the current Commissioner of Police.
