I mostly slept through it, but there was high drama in Road View last night as a huge turtle was spotted by the roadside next to Jentillia around 3:00 am last night. Apparently, the animal either took a wrong turn after laying on the beach behind us or (more credibly) it came straight up the track between Jentillia and the neighbor to the south in search of a sandy spot away from the surf.
As readers of this forum and my blogs know, our beach has been decimated by three massive rock groynes at the back of St. Peter's Bay condos built to create more "beach" for the high end home owners to whom they want to sell the condos. This is impacting not just humans socially and economically, but also animals, in particular the turtles. Last year on the Mullins Bay Blog in a post entitled "The Turtles Are Praying" -
http://mullinsbay.blogspot.com/2009/05/ ... again.html - I talked a little about some of this impact in terms of washed out nests, etc.
This is the second turtle this nesting season we know about which has sought much higher ground than normal for these animals in these parts. A few weeks ago a turtle nested high up in the track between The Great House
At Turtle Beach and the church next door. Since the groynes have been in place our beach has steadily grown both shorter and narrower stressing the turtles at nesting time. How does a government with legislation on the books supposedly protecting turtles as an endangered species allow this travesty on the beach in Road View to continue to exist is unconscionable.
Last night could have been a real tragedy as the animal could have attempted to cross the road and could have met with a vehicular accident. Fortunately, all's well that ends well, a group of Good Samaritan party-goers returning home stopped and after about half an hour managed to coax and guide the animal back to the ocean.
