Another Marina?

Here we discuss all matters relating to travel on the west coast of Barbados.

Another Marina?

Postby uktripfan on Mon Aug 18, 2008 4:26 pm

I just booked to stop at Port St.Charles in November   so I have been interested at reading the Nation story about another Marina, I know you posted a copy of it on this forum a while back KNRX. It seems many people are up in arms about this from reading various Barbados blogs. What I can't work out is where they are proposing it to go. I read six mens bay but surely that is too close to the present Port St.Charles and when you look on google earth I can't see how and where it would fit in. Just curious really.......do you know any more KNRX?

It is located across the road and to the north just pass PSC at Retreat. Turn right on the road that leads to the Sugar Cane Club the empty 20 or so acre lot they are proposing to build a marina on would be on your left. They would have to build a swing bridge to let the yachts into the marina. The big problem is that the previous government was talking about building a fishing complex like the one in Oistins next door to Retreat in Six Mens that would require people to move, but people, obviously, don't want to move even though they do not own the land they have lived on for generations. Apparently, the environmental impact studies for both projects were combined to save resources and people got them confused (or so the politicians of the previous government would have us believe).

Isn't that the bit of beach that they tell visitors to SugarCane Club is 2/3 mins from the beach?

I am not sure where SCC send their guests to the beach, but yes, they would destroy a portion (ok, large portion) of a very small beach.

Thanks KNRX for posting that google earth picture, NOW I understand where it is  What is the reasoning behind it, aren't there enough berths in PSC? It seems like a shame to give more land over to another Marina in such a small area. I can imagine people are upset too if it means having to move. It sounded like the building of it was imminent, is it definitely going ahead do you know?

A little birdie - http://twitpic.com/5pxb7 - has told me that construction is scheduled to start on the new marina at Six Mens/Retreat in St. Peter (next to the Port St. Charles) this coming September. Ok, maybe it's not a little birdie and maybe word of this is much more widespread than I know. I've been so busy lately trying to undo the coastal damage the developers of this new marina have already done to the beaches in the Mullins area that I must have missed that they are preparing to do an encore in Six Mens. It would probably explain why our calls for action in Mullins are falling on death ears on Bay Street. With nearly all the major construction projects on the west coast shuttered Government is desperate for anything to ease the unemployment situation even if it is about to commit another monumental environmental and ecological blunder.

Word on the street is that the new marina will be called "Port St. Bjorn."   I'm just kidding!    Bjorn, how about using the fill from excavating for the new marina to help correct the mess in Mullins :?:

I dont think the people who live in Six Mens will be happy about this, I could be wrong but they seem to want to disassociate themselves with any new developments further 'south'.
Maybe the employment issue will sway things.

This was quite a political football leading up to and during the general elections last year. The party in opposition then was ostensibly against it and the dislocation and disruption it would cause. Now in power and in cahoots with the developer they are singing a different tune.

I can't believe there is a need for this either, it was deathly quiet at PSC when we visited on Saturday

Unless I am mistaken, the rationale is that they want to cater to yachtsmen who want a place to moor their boats but do not necessarily want to buy a villa or condo.
