Barbados has applied to UNESCO to have its capital, Bridgetown, and its historic Garrison designated a World Heritage site. The process, which has been underway for several years, would have Bridgetown join renowned Caribbean sites the city of Trinidad, Cuba, Belize’s Great Barrier Reef, Morne Trois Pitons National Park in Dominica, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park in St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Pitons Management Area in St. Lucia. In a recent article in the Barbados Advocate, Nicholas Cox examines the advantages the designation would bring to Barbados, which, in addition to fostering tourism, would encourage the preservation of the city’s architecture and cultural legacy. Barbados, he writes, “will no doubt benefit from embracing the tenets of identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage sites across the capital, and thereby ensuring they are restored to their former beauty.”

I totally agree

There are some magnificent buildings in Barbados (albeit in various states of decline) that really could do with some TLC.

We thought that the Barbados Government was purposely letting these wonderful buildings just rot or slide into the sea so that they could built yet MORE high rises (at a nice profit???).

Speightstown should ALSO BE INCLUDED ON THIS - such lovely old buildings just being let go.........very, very sad.

Barbados goverment, please do NOT let your heritage go.

I agree with you Gem, Speightstown is lovely but sadly seems to be getting a 'neglected' look.

This could be rectified with a little thought by the Barbados government.

The main building at Sea-U Guest House at Bathsheba is built like this. Lovely.
