Markets upgrade

Published on: 11/2/2009.

MOST, IF NOT ALL, of this country's fish markets are to be upgraded by early next year.

Minister of Agriculture Senator Haynesley Benn gave this promise yesterday during the renaming ceremony of the Oistins Fish Market to the Berinda Cox Fish Market.

"Infrastructural work has commenced on the Bridgetown Complex. Similar activities are in the pipeline for the Berinda Cox Fish Market. Upgrade of the washroom facilities has already started," he said.

The minister pointed out that work had started on the upgrade of the boners' hall (at Berinda Cox Fish Market), in addition to some remedial work undertaken to rectify structural defects.

"As recently as last week the engineers completed their assessment and submitted the report to Government. Having received the recommendations of the engineers, work will recommence as early as next week to correct the defects in the boners' hall and hence complete the upgrade.

"This work will be done in a time frame that will minimise the inconvenience to those persons who currently operate from there. The repairs to the other structural defects will also commence in the shortest time possible once the requisite tendering process has been completed," said Benn.

He said construction of a sales area for the fishermen would be undertaken to modernise the operations within the Berinda Cox Fish Market with architectural drawings and tender documents already completed.

Additionally, he noted that the vending area for the fisherfolk would be completed
by early 2010.

"During the next financial year improvements will be done to the current vendors' booths to allow for a better display of fish on ice which will allow us to come in line with internationally accepted food safety standards.

"Any upgrades required for the blast freezers and cold storage areas will also be undertaken within that same time frame," he added.

Berinda Cox is a bit of a mouthful. As you both said it will always be Oistins to most I'd think.

It always amazes me that people want to change names of places. The spend a lot of money and effort getting them a high profile to go and change it and confuse people!

Seems to be a world-wide thing though, but seems a bit silly non the less.

Progress? Time will tell how many people know of the new name rather than what is a Bajan landmark at present........

I suppose ''Berina wotsit'' is what it is called, Oistins is where it is..wasn't the name a version of "Austins"

I think it is nice that they commemorate one of the workers there - but I think that everyone will still call it Oistins!

it's the fish market's name they are changing, not the area.. it's still Oistins.
