Four Seasons could restart by April 21

Published on: 4/12/2009.

CINNAMON 88, contractors of the multimillion-dollar Four Seasons resort, has still not given word on a date for resumption of the project, but sources tell the SUNDAY SUN, that work may resume in earnest by April 21.

Sources say that $150 million had been injected into the project by a Canadian company to help facilitate the project's restart since it was halted on February 19.

However, Michael Pemberton, chief executive officer at Cinnamon 88, had "no comment" in relation to the Canadian investment, but said things were looking positive.

"I still can't give too many details at this time, but I can say we are moving in the right direction . . . . these procedures do take some time as we have to sort the relevant paper work with lawyers and all the parties involved before we proceed, but things are positive," he said.

According to another source, temporary work has already begun to get the site ready for a restart, while local contractors, hired to provide a high percentage of the labour requirements, have been informed of an April 21 restart date.

"Basic work has started with cables being pulled to get the electricians back in, but it will be gradual before things go full blast again. From the information I've received, the major work will get on the way from April 21 and still then I don't think there will be as much activity like before it stopped," one source said.

"My boss informed me this week that workers would be going back to Four Seasons and although we were not out of work, we were glad to hear that because not everyone was able to move on to another job site the following week," a mason who was laid off from the project said.

Same opportunities

According to Cinnamon 88, the project's halt was only to facilitate a review of the design and scale of the development and should have taken a few working days.

However, financial difficulties with one of the major investors was later cited as the reason. Last month, some of the project's investors, which included some of Europe's biggest celebrities were said to be forming an action group to get the project moving.

Some of them have already made deposits to secure luxury villas at the Black Rock, St Michael development, retailing between US$10 million and US$40 million.

sorry KNRX - it shuts down when I try to open the link
I hope that the building does get completed. What a waste of a such a beautiful beach if it stayed as a building site.
That was the beach we went to on our first catamaran trip - quite eerie but beautiful with the trees all around and the deserted buildings

From http://www.nationnews.com/story/LEAD-four-seasons-update-FRONT-PAGE-OTHER

ALL REMAINING managerial staff on the Four Seasons project have been fired.

However, construction of the multi-million-dollar hotel and resort in Black Rock, St Michael, is scheduled to resume by September with a new contractor.

Employees who received notice about the termination of their services via telephone last Tuesday are accusing Cinnamon 88, the original contractor, of reneging on its repeated promises to rehire them.

They are also questioning the legality of the termination letters which were signed by Robin Patterson, one of the directors of the company. They claim that Patterson did not hold a work permit.

His letter indicated that a new capital partner made it clear it wished to restructure the company and to appoint a main contractor for the Four Seasons & Private Residences project.

"Whilst for many of you this is disappointing as Cinnamon 88 would no longer be the contractor, this decision takes away the uncertainty that currently exists," the letter said.

"Consequently, we have to inform you that your services are no longer required and your employment is terminated effective today, 28 July, 2009."

Patterson gave the WEEKEND NATION the assurance the project would resume in September.

This newspaper was reliably informed that the investor was Myabach Corporation, out of Canada.

Patterson said firing the staff was a stipulation from the new investors, but pointed out that the contractor would be a local one and more Barbadians would be employed than what obtained before.

He also confirmed that his work permit had expired on June 7, but said he was awaiting an extension.

He stated that as one of the directors he had to sign the letters because Mike Pemberton, chief executive officer of Cinnamon 88, was out of the island.

Former project manager Christopher Millington, along with other former employees, who did not want to be identified, questioned the legality of the letters and complained that no mention was made of their severance packages.

"We went to the National Insurance and the Labour Office trying to find out if this dismissal letter had any validation because it was signed by a man who has no work permit. And nobody can guide us on how to get our money. All they are telling us is that we would have to get an attorney," Millington stated.

Another man stated that the more than 30 employees were upset.

"It is outrageous after Mr Pemberton was publicly saying that we were only laid off temporarily and we will all be rehired," he said.

The workers were also given until today to return the company's vehicles, cellular phones and laptop computers.

Allen Stanford may or may not have had a hand in Four Seasons and other projects in Barbados, after all he had a lot of money to invest. However, IMHO, the problems at Four Seasons and the others in Barbados are related more to the drying up easy credit as a result of the global economic crisis. It's not just Barbados - it's Las Vegas, Dubai, Miami, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Macau, basically anywhere there was massive construction of tourism related developments. It is true that there are crooks like Stanford all over the world that have had a hand in some of these projects, but the problem is larger than Stanford.
