Yesterday I rode past Mullins Beach on a mini-bus and felt a sense of pride on seeing that the beach was at its widest in months and filled with visitors. Some may not like this, but two rows of loungers lined the beach almost all the way to Westpoint cottage on the northern end. The sun was shining and people seemed to be having fun. Then the thought struck me that this is what we will lose forever if we don't stop the beach condo/villa development madness that's destroying our coastline.
Just moments before I passed by the now demolished "The Palace" site where (as we speak) they are now driving steel piles 20' into the beach to create a seawall in a very sensitive area which (among other more dreadful forebodings for the area) will make what is already a major challenge to walk around on the beach - an almost certain impossibility. How do our coastal authorities approve such atrocities is way beyond my capacity to comprehend, especially as we have all seen the results of the seawall and rock revetment built a few yards north at The Great House two years. We need to redouble our efforts if this madness is to be stopped.
Consequently, it is with utmost urgency that I present above our latest video effort which seeks to remind our members, readers, followers and friends of the various social media tools we utilize in our ongoing battle to save the beaches in the Mullins Bay area, and to encourge their use as never before. In the next few days we intend to launch a petition drive on this issue and we need all hands on deck.
