Here's an article from Sky News and associated video clip. Worryingly, Tomas is gathering strength and heading towards Jamaica and ..... Haiti.

Not too surprisingly, it seems yesterday's VS29 diverted to LGW so there is a knock on effect on flights of course with today's VS29, 30 and 77 all delayed.

I certainly hope there was no loss of life. It was a bad storm for Barbados and will probably take a while for a real assessment of damage. The loss of power in a storm of this magnitude can be devastating to a country like Barbados.

One cable news network here in the US last night was showing the storm at its height in Barbados and it was quite a blow. My heart goes out to all that suffered damage in Bim and to those in the region that have been or will be affected by this storm.

To lose a Prime Minister and have a hurricane hit your country within days of each other is catastrophic. My prayers are with everyone in Barbados.

I just watched the videos Bertha posted about, they really show the devastation caused by the storm. Thankfully there have been no reports of fatalities, although terrible, buildings and roads can be repaired but lives are irreplaceable.

Still no power in Bridgetown and there is a flood warning until 12 I think it is. However it is dry at the moment and the big clean up is ongoing. Sooo want to be there to help

There is possibly worse to come, as they are now on official flood warning, bearing in mind waterways and gullys etc are likely to be blocked with debris it does have the potential to be serious but lets pray for some Image

Some good news!

GAIA expected to reopen today

10/31/2010

All flights were grounded and others cancelled yesterday as Tropical Storm Tomas hurtled towards Barbados.

The system, accompanied by heavy rains and 60 mile per hour winds with higher gusts, forced the closure of Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) and resulted in several passengers having to be turned back.

Speaking to the Barbados Advocate after the ‘all clear’ had been issued by the Barbados Meteorological Service yesterday afternoon, Corporate Communications Specialist for GAIA Incorporated Keith Goddard said that the airport would remain closed until 6 a.m. today.

Stressing that the airport was secure, he stated, “All the necessary assessments are currently being done on the airport and its environs.”

Saying that the transmitting antennae, which allows communication between the tower and the aircraft was damaged during the bad weather, Goddard gave the assurance that the GAIA engineering technicians were working feverishly “around the clock” to repair this and restore radio communication.

Several airlines cancelled their flights yesterday because of the passage of the weather system including Air Canada, WestJet, JetBlue, American Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, LIAT and Caribbean Airlines.

Flights from England on Virgin and BA were diverted to Antigua.

Operations are expected to return to normal today and Goddard urged passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information.

Meanwhile, Tomas has been upgraded to a Category One Hurricane as it barrels towards the Windward Islands. (JMB)
