This question was sparked by a convo with another poster...
I always have problems sleeping prior to starting a trip...and blamed that for the reason I usually fall asleep very quickly on a flight (sometimes even prior to take-off). Then it was pointed out to me that whenever I get stressed I like to sleep, so got me thinking that my sleeping during flights is my antidote to the stress of flying.
How do YOU cope with the stress of getting underway on vacation?

Yes I always have problems sleeping the night before a trip too - think it is the worry about missing the flight!! It only effects me when I'm going though - not when I'm due to go home! I find a large glass of wine helps

Usually find going on holiday is a stress antidote, more to worry about in the real world & I am sure people have a lot more stress about things other than getting on a plane.

I usually have a less than restful sleep when we are due to return home too, although I always try to stay awake when we are flying out of Barbados if only to have that last wistful glimpse of paradise.

I am the opposite to you Pat & Hils, i don't get stressed just excited. i usually have a few beers the night before which helps me nod off quite easily. As for sleeping on the plane i just cannot fall asleep even if i have a couple of large vodka & tonics..wish i could though.

I'm like you Brett, I don't get stressed just excited :D BUT sleeping is another thing altogether for me because I don't get to sleep very easily ever, holiday or not

Another vote for over excitement for me  I'm usually so late to bed the night before I go, I'm shattered and struggle to drag my sorry backside out of bed

As for sleeping on the plane, amazingly, for someone that can sleep "anywhere" a plane is one of the few places it doesn't seem to happen... If it does happen though, it's usually on final descent, once even AFTER we touched down

I agree there is more stress realising that the dreaded day, once something in the future, has come & you gotta go home!! The home bit is OK, it's the other crap you go back to!
Sleeping on the plane....I usually drop off only for the "breakfast" to arrive or someone asking if I need to buy a cuddly plane or fags.

What stress is there to going on holiday ? I am only stressed when I dont have one to look forward to

Excitement keeps me awake the night before the flight out - I dont mind anymore because then I know I will sleep on the flight (sometimes before takeoff !) and on the way home have enough to drink while watching the "last sunset" of the holiday to ensure that I sleep on the way home too !

Manchester airport arrivals is another matter though ! you need to have another holiday planned/booked to ensure that doesnt wind you up

About the only stress for me holiday wise, is deciding if now is a good time to buy the airline tickets, or will they be cheaper tomorrow. I love flying. It's about the only time I feel that something is out of my control, so I just relax and enjoy it.

I envy you lot that don’t get stressed  the day before I go on holiday I’m always totally stressed. Nothing to do with the flying more to do with there always seems to be a crisis at work just before I go on holiday so I end up spending the night before frantically sending emails, then panicking whether I’ve packed everything I need. Finally going to bed at about 1.30am and then getting up at 3.30am to leave for the airport......it always seems to be the same.

Going on holiday is about the only time I am stress free, from the minute I leave home I am in 'happy mood'. I love the planning, the lead up, the flight, just about everything, I am also happy to be coming home to my family, my dog and my home :D

I do agree there can be a lot of last minute stuff that just creeps up on you, especially Mrs JTD who refuses to even speak about planning ahead, won't accept any help, insists on doing everything but keeps putting it off.

I agree with sue about coming home...it is always nice to sleep in your own bed that first night home and I do miss my family when I am away...and suew...good advice re the plane...I too am a bit of a control freak and when you look at it from your point of view of its out of your control so relax...it certainly beats getting drunk in the bar before boarding
I wonder what would happen if airports got rid of alcohol in the terminals?
