 I don't know what is worse, the fact that this incident happened or the indifference of the police.

Another reason to avoid the island too, in fact from what I see the whole region is becoming more lawless, they say it's people from other islands or deportees from the US, but to me if they are on the island it becomes a problem for that island.

Difficult to know whether to believe the police PRO who says they arrived after 15 -20 mins or the local resident, who says they took an hour , the gunmen are known ,but I guess unless the gunmen are caught in the act ,local people need to be prepared to name them for the police to act?

Oh my! I find the comments after the story about all the aggravated burglaries and assaults in St.James and Paynes Bay really frightening too. It sounds like there is fast becoming a very real and nasty threat in Barbados. I am glad you posted on TA too Viv, seems like I am the constant crime guru lately   Where is all that news in the local media?? that is what really pees me off!

I have always known there were problems but they were always between locals, as in fact the latest incident was....even taking into account the reticent attitude of the local press, we do maybe hear more than we used to?

I just made this comment on Facebook
'for years they have controlled the press and suppressed reports of crime but this is no longer possible with the power of the internet... it will just turn round and bite them on the ass'
This is the only reason we hear more now John!

Really? I for one think it is actually getting worse, I think there is a generation of young men who think crime pays more than work, you only have to read the police reports to ascertain that they think the same thing. I also don't think there has been incidents like the rapes we have seen in the last few weeks before. I think they would have 'come out', as they have done in the FCO warnings. I genuinely think crime is getting worse, I think the statistics of 2010 will make very interesting reading should they ever be allowed to see the light of day. I think they need to get a grip on it, tourism is their major source of income and it will be badly shaken if people don't feel safe on the island. I can't say I feel thrilled about safety at the moment!

Now an article in the nation about shoot ups at quite a few matches, that really is lawless!

Thinking on....I actually think it IS getting worse AND we hear more about it!!
But despite the vision of crime free paradise that some contributors put forward there has always been gun crime, there has always been drugs & there have always been machete attacks (known as "choppin's"). I know some were upset when I described BDS as a ''Third world'' or ''Developing nation'' & she has developed a great deal over the years BUT you ain't gotta go too far off the beaten track to see scenes of poverty where people have no choice but to exist as they do.

I have copied the comments that were on the now closed topic on TA and will try and send them to Richard Sealy (Tourism minister) in the hope that he will realize how strongly visitors feel about these issues and ultimately the damage it may do to the islands tourism, who knows maybe it will do some good in the long run.
