I was thinking that the beaches looked narrow enough already, just to go ahead and add a boardwalk? Ugh, I'm not looking forward to that.

When I saw the post title I must admit my first reaction was - that'd be nice. (You can tell I'm a south coast girl!!) But I agree having read the article it is a bad idea. (PS that wedding is getting close - not long now)

I think the idea is to widen the beach in the process similarly to what was done in places along the South Coast Boardwalk. When it's completed you should be able to walk on the boardwalk or sandy beach from the area around Settlers Beach/Mango Bay in the north clear down past Sandy Lane and Paynes Bay in the south.

If they leave the beaches ALONE the come back on their own, we used to go more than once a year & the difference between one time & another was incredible maybe 10 feet ..what do you think Frank?

Yes, Sue, and if they get it done in the timeframe they are talking - in time for the start of the 2009/2010 tourist season - you may have to be back before the end of the year. Twice in one year! Now you are really going to have to buy that west coast condo you were eying last week.

That's still largely true, JTD, but some beaches are eroded so badly for more than one reason that human intervention may not be altogether a bad idea. You would probably be amazed how much beach there is right now behind Leamington and Sandridge I don't think there was ever that much beach there in all the years the hotel was located there. There was even a woman sunbathing behind Lemington last week.   I have a picture I'll look for and post later. So, the evil groins rebuilt Sandrige/Lemington beach to the north but decimated Kings Beach and others to the south.

Frankie - we thought it was a mirage when we walked up from Schooner to Sandridge, we could not believe the beach there,
we thought they had imported sand at the front of Leamington - and such a lovely golden colour.
p.s. November is looking good 8)

Soon enough the old “Where are the better beaches – the South coast or the West?” will give way to “Which boardwalk is better?”. 8)

Here are the shots I promised, JTD. If you look closely at the first one you will notice a woman sunbathing on sandy beach behind Lemington where only a short time ago there was only a narrow path on top of a rocky sea wall built to stop Lemington falling into the ocean. This beach disappeared in the early '70 after they built the first groin/jetty in the area (also visible in shot) just south of Cobblers Cove.

Yes, Sue, it is truly amazing. Now if we can get that old jetty out of the way maybe the beach I knew there as a child will all come back. November sounds good.
